Description

What the world knows about Sanjay duty is only half-truths. best-selling author, film producer and renowned journalist Ram Kamal Mukherjee unravels the enigma and stigma surrounding Sanju Baba. There can be no last word on Sanjay Dutt. Ever. Even as he walks a free man after more than three decades of prison terms and controversies, Dutt remains a classic case study in all that defines the ‘star’ system in Hollywood industry known for its deep-rooted sense of entitlement. However, there is one question that dominates: who is the real Sanjay duty? Is he a man who has been ‘wronged by the media’, as his friend and filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani wants everyone to believe? Is he a son who could never recover from his mother’s death? Is he a son whose father political leanings made him an easy target? Or is he a myth, created by a consortium of film journalists, industry insiders, political fiends and adversaries? Delving deep into both the man and his circumstances, Sanjay Dutt: one man, many lives tells the Uncut, untold and uncensored story of Sanjay balraj duty. What emerges is an accountant much about one man’s laudable efforts to keep reinventing himself, as it is about his privileges. Privileges that were seldom earned and always taken for granted. This is the closest anyone can ever come to understanding Sanju Baba.

Sanjay with former wife Rhea Pillai

Sanjay with former wife Rhea Pillai

Sanjay put his wife on a public pedestal, according her the kind of respectability and status that would silence his detractors—for a while, at least. He spoke of how his wife was a grounded girl who reminded him of his mother. A simple, domestic person, who made it worth the while to come home after living like a gypsy.

Manyata was everything that his previous women were not. She was also everything he seemed to want at that stage in his life. She compensated for her lack of pedigree, finesse or glamour, by being someone who was completely devoted to him and put his well-being over everything else—even if it cost him his old friendships and closest relationships.

His sisters did not attend the wedding.

Those were also the days when the underworld called the shots in the film industry. Quite literally. Films were funded by the mafia and stars were obliged to make appearances at events hosted by gangsters—especially in Dubai. Said Sanjay, ‘It was at this time that a producer asked me if I wanted a gun ’ One casual remark led to another and the star, who was then at a professional high with a gym-fresh sculpted body and a string of commercial successes, suddenly had an AK-47 in his hands. A fact he has admitted to, repeatedly, but always defending his intent-self preservation and protecting his family.

But that was not all. Dutt was accused of accepting a delivery of weapons at his house from notorious gangster Abu Salem and his co-accused Riaz Siddiqui, who had also been implicated in the blasts. It was claimed that the weapons formed a part of a large consignment of arms connected to the terror masterminds.

Sanjay Dutt with father Sunil Dutt and sisters Priya and Namrata

History says star-sons have always played hopscotch with their fathers’ legacies. Sanjay Dutt was no exception. While his devotion toward his mother has been well established, not enough has been documented about how he spent his childhood living in the shadow of a father who, in modern parlance, would be described as tyrannical.

This may be incomprehensible for those who remember Sunil Dutt as the stately gentleman; the soft-spoken, kind-hearted, earnest and upright citizen; the social worker and devoted husband. But even the finest of men and husbands do not always make the best of fathers.

The world would not come to know about what really went on in the Dutt household, had it not been for a sensational interview of Sanjay Dutt by Stardust many moons ago, which first seeded the idea that his reckless, self-destructive behaviour was probably a result of bad parenting.

A Conversation with Ram Kamal Mukherjee

Ram Kamal Mukherjee, India’s first Power Brand film journalist, is a columnist, producer, director and award-winning writer. He has interviewed legends of world cinema like Majid Majidi, Abbas Kairostami, Mrinal Sen, Aparna Sen, Gautam Ghosh, Rituparno Ghosh, Mani Ratnam, Vishal Bharadwaj, A.R. Rahman, Shabana Azmi, Naseerudin Shah, Deepa Mehta, Mira Nair, Revathy, Kamal Hassan, Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Sonam Kapoor, Ashutosh Gowarikar, Nandita Das, Kangana Ranaut, Sushmita Sen, Madhuri Dixit, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to name a few. Ram Kamal’s biography of Hema Malini, Beyond the Dream Girl (2017), won him five prestigious Best Author awards.

Ram Kamal produced and directed the critically acclaimed short film Cakewalk (2019), starring Esha Deol. He has also completed a second short feature film, A Tribute to Rituparno Ghosh: Season’s Greetings.

The latest offering from this multi-talented Bollywood insider is an exploration of the life of Bollywood’s Baba—Sanju Baba.

Q. You are now an acclaimed film director, so why continue writing?

I think of myself as a storyteller. I always wanted to be one. Right from my journalism days, I have tried to seek interesting stories from the world of celluloid. And even though films take up a majority of my time currently, I will keep writing as there are many more stories waiting to be told.

Q. This is not the first biography on Sanjay Dutt, so why do another book on him? What is the story you want to tell readers?

The earlier book focussed on the ‘wild’ side of Sanjay Dutt. My book, however, portrays the human side of Sanju Baba. This is an in-depth look at his life, drawn from thousands of interviews by or about Sanjay.

Q. Is there an irresistible allure to those who have a rogue-like streak in them? You might love him or hate him, but can you ignore Sanjay Dutt? Is he a man misunderstood by people around him?

True. You can’t ignore Sanjay Dutt. He’s the most misunderstood star of our generation. I don’t understand why the media keeps raving about the philanthropic side of stars like Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan, even though it is actually Sanjay Dutt who is famous within the film fraternity for his king-sized heart. Unfortunately, his giving nature was exploited to the hilt by some of his erstwhile friends. Fortunately, all that ended when his wife Manyata took charge of his life and lifestyle. I believe Sanju is a man-child, always waiting for someone to hold his hand and guide him.

Q. Is there a hidden story behind every controversy of his life?

This book has many untold stories, perspectives and anecdotes that will definitely give the reader the feel of any Bollywood thriller. His is no ordinary tale—it’s a rollercoaster.

Q. Have you changed your opinion of Sanjay Dutt during the course of research for the book?

Yes! In fact, I came close to tears while researching on his life and even went into depression when I was writing about him. I felt as if I had entered a dark hole, without the possibility of ever coming out. He must have felt much, much worse. It’s helplessness and vulnerability that makes him so very lovable. Every last straw that failed him, makes you cry out loud. Yes, many of these last straws were his own doing, but you still feel for him. After a point, I told myself that I should stay detached as my role is simply as the sutradhar (narrator) of a riveting tale. Nothing more, nothing less.
